Police checkpoints to monitor Spring Bling

RIVIERA BEACH — Police plan to make thousands of beachgoers wade through a series of checkpoints before getting to Singer Island during Spring Bling.

The stops are part of the city's plan to curb traffic and screen crowds as it hosts the popular three-day event sponsored by Black Entertainment Television. BET plans to invite 3,000 college students to Riviera Beach for the taping of the network's premier spring-break event March 23-25, and many more onlookers may want to get a glimpse of the hip-hop artists who will perform.

NFL has policies that could bench Pacman

The National Football League has policies for both personal behavior and substance abuse, and both could relate to Titans cornerback Pacman Jones.

Recent allegations by a Georgia drug task force officer describe Jones as a marijuana user who indicated he knows how to beat the NFL's drug-testing procedures.

Usha Uthup heats up Hattrick music launch

Singer Usha Uthup did the unthinkable. She actually made the normally up-tight media personnel get into clapping-mode as she belted out the calypso beat of Wicket Bachao, a high-energy-fun-song from Milan Luthrias Hattrick at the music launch of the same film in Mumbai today. Uthups live performance had to be seen to be believed.

Dressed in an opulently colourful Sari along with matching Red Nike Sneakers (she actually displayed it to the papparazi), she laughed-n-sang her way into everyones heart. She asked the lead pair of Kunal Kapoor and Rimi Sen to join her on stage later. And the tall-n-lanky Kapoor sang his off-key-parts with pearly-white-confidence.

Speaking at the occasion, director Milan Luthria said, Life is like a tournament. We need people to come as a team to pick out a trick from the magic hat.

Approximately 1,175 lawsuits have been filed over Guidant's defibrillators. (Stephen F. Heuser)

UW men's hockey: Road to beckon Badgers

DULUTH, Minn. - The notion of do or die leaves no room for interpretation or apologies. You either get the job done or mourners show up at the front door bearing funeral casseroles.

But there was a poignant twist to that reality for the University of Wisconsin men's hockey team Friday night.

UW did what it had to do, coming alive down the stretch to produce a 3-1 Western Collegiate Hockey Association win over Minnesota-Duluth at the Duluth Entertainment and Convention Center.

Center Jake Dowell and defenseman Kyle Klubertanz (empty net) scored goals in the final 1 minute, 40 seconds, and goaltender Brian Elliott was exceptional en route to 34 saves.

Crapshoot for Vegas franchise

The center of gambling in the United States, Las Vegas, is marketed as "The Entertainment Capital of the World." It is also commonly known as "Sin City" or "Vice City" due to the popularity of legalized gambling, availability of alcoholic beverages at any time, and various forms and degrees of adult entertainment. Yet, Vegas lacks a professional sports team. After some extensive research on the topic, I'll tell you why.

Las Vegas was ranked as the 29th largest city in the United States in 2000, but recent surveys suggest that the city's population has since surpassed that of Atlanta, Nashville, Washington D.C., Louisville, Denver and Boston to place it 22nd in rank with a population of just over 1.6 million. So what's the problem?

Let us start with a semi obvious one: sports betting and gambling.

Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation

To bring a dose of fun to young patients, Colgate-Palmolive and Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation are asking people across the country to log on and vote for five lucky hospitals currently on a waiting list for "Fun Centers," mobile entertainment units that kids can enjoy at their bedside, or anywhere in a hospital setting, while they recover. This year, Colgate-Palmolive will sponsor a total of 60 Fun Centers across the country as part of their annual donation to Starlight Starbright Children's Foundation.

As part of a new program to bring Fun Centers to more hospitals and reduce the long waiting list, Colgate-Palmolive and Starlight Starbright are launching a national online vote, now through March 31st, inviting communities across the country to help make a difference in the lives of seriously ill children.
