| ON THE RECORD: Weill & Brecht's Happy End, plus Kern ...
The first-ever English language recording of Kurt Weill and Bert Brecht's Happy Ending is out on CD, as is an obscure recording of Jerome Kern and Oscar Hammerstein's unjustly forgotten Music in the Air. **** HAPPY END [Ghostlight 7915584418] Falling under the category of unexpected pleasures is the original cast album of the American Conservatory Theatre production of the Weill-Brecht Happy End. Pure, unadulterated and acerbic joy. Three quarters of a century after the piece opened and closed in a cloud of controversy, we finally have an English-language cast album. The Happy End score, from 1929, proves to be every bit as flavorful as its 1928 predecessor, The Threepenny Opera. Michael Feingold has championed this piece since at least 1972, when his adaptation was produced at the Yale Rep.

Film festival leads full bill of arts opportunities
With the Macon Georgia Film & Video Festival in full swing through Sunday, there's really no need for any other entertainment options this weekend - but in typical Macon fashion we also have a full slate of other worthy events beckoning to us. Tonight, of course, is a First Friday, so there'll be plenty of art exhibits downtown and other activities - as well as MAGA. Be sure to drop by the Golden Bough to congratulate Eric Wakefield, the new proprietor, and to say thanks and farewell to Lilly Ambrose, who will soon complete a master's degree in library science and move on to fresh adventures. Tonight's "Celebration of Change" will be Lilly's last First Friday. When she first put the bookshop up for sale, many were fearful that it would vanish from the downtown scene, so Wakefield's decision comes as good news for both downtown and the literary community.
Flower show: Tips for bringing the wee ones
The Pennsylvania Convention Center can be extremely crowded. Roughly a quarter-million folks visit the show each year, and no matter when you go, it may be wall-to-wall tourists. Little ones may find it difficult to see over the heads of adults, so probably the best place for small children is at home with a baby sitter. Fortunately for those who do bring young children, the theme this year is a kid-friendly one. With Legends of Ireland, many major exhibitors focus on fanciful landscapes. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society particularly recommends exhibits by the Camden Children's Garden, with its fairy homes, and Waldor Orchids' orchid wonderland as good bets. The society also points out that entertainment should delight young visitors. There are Irish dancers, musicians and singers performing every hour on the hour daily at the Castle Stage.
