| Christina Flowers Is Blooming
Where She's From: Christina Flowers was born in Pittsburgh, PA. Her mother hails from the South Side of Chicago and her father is from Gulfport, MS. “I am the eldest of six," the lovely young model and actress tells The Black Star News. “I believe one of the deepest lessons my parents have instilled in me and my siblings is ‘Remember where you came from and know your roots.'" An old Creole saying is, “Tell me whom you love and I'll tell you who you are." Christina believes that all parents should teach their children about their background so that they have self esteem, knowledge and confidence. “People many times don't pass down the history of their heritage because they may be ashamed of it," she explains. “Kids must have a sense of self-pride and love." “As a member of several minority groups: woman, Black and young, I am aware of the diversity within many communities. Coming from an all-white, suburban community to an atmosphere that has allowed me to intermix with different races and cultures in an urban environment, two seemingly polar-opposite environments, has taught me to look deeper than the surface and recognize the commonalities that exist beyond appearances," she continues.

New chef whips up winners
Stephen Lash, the new executive chef at the Rhythm House Cafe, has served everyone from former President Bill Clinton at the Duquesne Club to on-the-go travelers at Pittsburgh International Airport. That's all the proof one needs to realize food is truly our most common denominator. Over the next month, area diners will see this mix of cooking fit for heads of state and blue collar workers on display at the Bridgeville entertainment mainstay. "We're going to have a menu that reflects that. We have a wide range of people in the area," said Lash. Lash, who took over the kitchen on Jan. 8, is aiming to make the menu every bit the headliner as weekly performances of live country and rock music. A Mt. Lebanon native, he graduated from Westmoreland County Community College with associates degrees in culinary arts and restaurant management.
