A New York Avenue State of Mind

Often it's hard to say, "I {heart} New York Avenue." Commuters headed into the city from Maryland pass through a gantlet of auto repair shops and fast-food restaurants. If the grease doesn't provide enough danger, there's always the intersection at Bladensburg Road NE. The crossroad was the city's most crash-prone in a D.C. government study. But once you get past that tough New York reputation, culture and beauty await.

The street, which starts just outside the District at the Baltimore-Washington Parkway and ends by 18th Street NW, is home to a museum dedicated to female artists. The National Museum of Women in the Arts features works by nearly 800 women, including Georgia O'Keeffe and Frida Kahlo.

For another unique cultural experience, try live music with breakfast.

West Point Military Academy turns Belizean young woman into soldier

Meet Cadet Justine Swift. She is a 20-year-old student, attending the West Point Military Academy, in West Point New York (50 miles north of New York City.)

Originally from Bomba Village in the Belize Rural North, Swift grew up in Belize surrounded by 6 siblings.

Village life was slow and did not offer much in line of entertainment or opportunities. But that didnt bother her. With five brothers and a sister, home was an interesting place to be.

She attended primary school and then moved on to Stann-Creek Ecumenical High School. Not quite satisfied, she decided to pursue a Bachelors Degree at the University of Belize.

Her plan was to graduate and find a job like everyone else in her family had done, and then settle down.

Then out of the blue, an opportunity to attend West Point Academy came up.

`60s killings are still a bizarre whodunit

SACRAMENTO, Calif. - To this day, writer Robert Graysmith believes that Zodiac, the serial killer who terrorized San Francisco, Vallejo and Napa County in the late 1960s, was Arthur Leigh Allen, a onetime schoolteacher and convicted pedophile who died in 1992.

Retired cop Ken Narlow doesn't think so, and he has a feeling Zodiac is still alive.

"I think he's out there somewhere," says Narlow.

The five murders Zodiac claimed - four young people and a San Francisco cabbie - remain unsolved, and his identity is uncertain.

Graysmith and Narlow were major players in the sensational drama that surrounded the Zodiac killings more than 30 years ago - and in the making of the documentary-style thriller "Zodiac" (in theaters Friday). It's based on Graysmith's true-crime best-sellers "Zodiac" and "Zodiac Unmasked."

Graysmith (played by Jake Gyllenhall) was a young editorial cartoonist at the San Francisco Chronicle in 1969.
