Better late than never

CHAKRADHARPUR/CHAIBASA, March 2: Mr Sukhram Oraon, the Jharkhand Mukti Morchas member of the legislative Assembly from Chakradharpur, has decided, in a departure from his usual, questionable ways, to brighten up his academic track record. He appeared for this years secondary examinations in Jharkhand along with his son, Sunny, younger brother, Mr Sukhdev Oraon, and Mr Basudev Lakra, brother-in-law. Known initially for his alleged underworld links, he joined politics to win the Chakradharpur seat in 2005. Personal reasons interrupted my formal education in Class X. But when I saw my son and the relatives catch up, I decided I had to get back to it. It was a hard decision, given that I am an MLA, but I am not ashamed of myself, said Mr Oraon. His son, he said, helped him with his studies. He is a very good learner who follows instructions scrupulously.

B-Mets to feature more entertainment

BINGHAMTON -- Binghamton Mets general manager Scott Brown concedes the seventh-inning stretch won't be moved around on the program during baseball games at NYSEG Stadium this year.

"But everything else is fair game," said Brown, who outlined Thursday what team officials are calling a "philosophical shift" in how they will handle off-field entertainment this coming season.

"We feel like the game of baseball is the best game in the world, and we're attracting fans and having great success with that," Brown said after a presentation to fans and local media at The Forum in downtown Binghamton.

"But to take it to the next level, we felt as if we needed to focus on entertainment as a whole to attract more and more people, hopefully introduce them to baseball for the first time and make them lifelong fans."

Sparked by the addition of a new video scoreboard over the right-center wall at NYSEG Stadium, B-Mets officials plan to rotate promotional nights, entertainment acts, theme nights and special jersey nights to form 71 unique "shows" over the 2007 season.

'Astronaut Farmer' family-friendly blast for everyone

Billy Bob Thornton hits the jackpot in a likeable title role. He plays a frustrated, small-town Texas cattle rancher who dreams of flying in space and orbiting the Earth. He is blessed with the perfect close-knit family. His supporting wife (Virginia Madsen) is the vision of loveliness. His young daughters are two of the cutest little girls on the planet. His competent teenage son is named Shepard as a tribute to the first American to blast off in NASA's Mercury program. This corny and predictable story captures the essence of why we love movies so much. It has all the right stuff thanks to the joint screenwriting efforts of talented brothers Michael (who also directed) and Mark Polish. This is original storytelling at its pure and finest form. This movie will get your attention immediately with its opening scene of Thornton on horseback wearing a space suit set against a brilliant Southwestern sunset.
