Maxim magazine publisher to explore sale

NEW YORK (Reuters) - Dennis Publishing Inc., publisher of "lad magazine" Maxim, said it was exploring strategic alternatives, including a possible sale, as the number of readers of men's magazines falls.

The company hired media bankers Allen & Co. as its exclusive financial adviser.

Dennis, which also owns lad magazine Stuff and music magazine Blender, is credited with resuscitating the men's magazine sector with publications featuring glossy spreads of scantily clad women.

Maxim, launched in the mid-nineties in the United Kingdom, made its U.S. debut in 1997.

Felix Dennis, the company's outspoken and colorful billionaire owner, has been cast by the media as a modern Hugh Hefner, founder of adult entertainment magazine Playboy Enterprises Inc..

A Former Child Star's Grown-Up Reward

Most of your Oscar-nominated movie stars don't pick up the phone and holler, "Hey, man, it's Jackie Earle, call me back!" and leave a message with their home number. When they do lunch? It's usually not in the blandlands of the San Fernando Valley, a few miles from where they grew up in Canoga Park. Cate Blanchett? Eddie Murphy? We don't make them for Cheesecake Factory people, but that's exactly where Jackie Earle Haley wants to eat. He's going to have that Hawaiian pizza, the one with pineapples and bacon. He's a regular.

Cast members from Jersey Boys, Spamalot, The Drowsy Chaperone and Chicago, along with "American Idol" finalist Constantine Maroulis (The Wedding Singer, Jacques Brel), will be among the performers at the 3rd Annual Broadway Purim Shpiel at the Hudson Theatre on March 4.

The event begins at 4:30 PM with a Megillah reading, complimentary cocktails and food. The main Purim Shpiel portion begins at 7 PM and is followed by a wine and dessert reception at 9 PM.

Purim is the Jewish holiday commemorated by dressing up in masks and costumes and reading the Megillah, also known as the Book of Esther. In the story, Queen Esther helps her fellow Jews in Persia escape from being killed by Haman.

The event is presented by the Taglit-Birthright Israel Alumni Association, along with the National Entertainment Fund for the Cultural Arts (NEFCA) and the event's co-chairs, Michael Steinhardt, Charles Bronfman and Lynn Schusterman.

Jerry Seinfeld In Hot Water With Documentary Filmmaker

When Jerry Seinfeld came out to present the Best Documentary Award at last month's Oscar telecast, I turned to the person next to me (who was a total stranger) and said "Seinfeld presenting an Oscar? Who's next? Ray Romano?" And then the comic kicked in with a real tired old piece of comedy schtick about the litter you often find in movie theaters. (I guess by now he's run out of jokes about airplane food.) Anyway, the guy was a silly choice to be an Oscar presenter -- and now one of the Oscar-nominated documentarians has decided to speak up for another reason.Iraq in Fragments producer John Sinno is more than a little unhappy -- justifiably so if you ask me -- and he's not being shy about his displeasure. I'll post the full letter (entitled "An Open Letter to the Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences") after the jump, but here's the gist of his umbrage: Seinfeld was pretty damn disrespectful of the documentary genre while cracking jokes for a billion-plus audience.

Love saga provides political respite

Manila: A television love triangle between a professional basketball player, his celebrity wife and a pretty nurse, is providing an entertaining alternative for Filipinos bored with endless political campaigning.

Actress and game show host Kris Aquino has admitted that she has been severely affected by the running scandal between her husband James Yap's alleged involvement with another woman, a certain Hope Centeno, a nurse at a popular skin clinic which the actress' spouse allegedly frequents.

"What hurts me most is that now I am the one who has to face the people and explain everything," Kris tearfully said in Tagalog in an interview published by the Philippine Entertainment Portal (PEP) website.

Near miscarriage

Kris, the daughter of former president Corazon Aquino, is seven months pregnant with her baby by Yap.

BET's College Hill 4 Premieres a Sizzling New Season on Tuesday ...

"I was very proud of COLLEGE HILL 3, which had the best ratings and best viewer response of the series," said Reginald Hudlin, BET President of Entertainment. "But I can say COLLEGE HILL 4 takes it to another level. It is truly outrageous!"

In the first episode, the new roommates meet and greet each other with a little trepidation. There's Krystal, the upscale girl from the real O.C. who often finds herself at the root of all the dissention between the two groups; JT, a wannabe rapper from Compton, Calif. struggling to remain true to his girlfriend while actively being pursued by one of his new Virgin Islander roommates; Fallon, the one woman you don't want to cross from Inglewood, Calif.; and Willie from L.A., who is "single as hell" and constantly looking.

Representing the Caribbean crew are the outspoken and outrageous Idesha--she's the one relentlessly pursuing JT; Chicky, a soft-spoken star athlete who generally gets along with the Californians until they start trash talking his island; Vanessa, a gorgeous green-eyed girl who has a hard time adjusting to the Cali kids and their attitudes; and Andres, a pretty boy with bedroom eyes and a smile that melts butter, who likes to sit back and take in the drama.
