Valentine's Day: Have the Ladies' Mags Lost the Love?
Given that the media often turn to the subject of love at this time of year, the Media Research Center's Culture and Media Institute decided to find out what women's magazines are writing about in their February issues. The answer is, pretty much what you'd expect -- from Playboy. In 11 of the top-selling monthly women's magazines, with a combined circulation of more than 30 million, messages about S-E-X outnumber messages about love and romance more than 2-to-1. Typical topics: Who's doing what, where and how many times a week? What do you do if you aren't getting it? How do you make what you are getting even better? In a few cases, the sex is in the context of marriage, but for the most part it's sex for sex's sake. In some top magazines sex is described so graphically that if it were portrayed visually it would be labeled porn and relegated to shops selling "adult" entertainment.

Rejuvenated Martha Stewart, 65, not slowing down
NEW YORK - Think your life is busy? Try stepping into Martha Stewart's garden clogs for a day. Safe to say the lifestyle mogul's brain wasn't idle those five months behind bars. At an age when most people begin the big slowdown (believe it, 65), Stewart is making up for the time lost to her 2004 insider-trading conviction. "We had about two years of no growth. That was a real step backwards for us," said Stewart, whose March 2005 release was followed by five months of house arrest. "Everyone wanted the turnaround to happen quickly, including me," she said in an interview on the set of NBC's "The Martha Stewart Show." "It's tremendous - we feel rejuvenated and reenergized." No kidding. The press "kit" for Martha Stewart Living Omnimedia fills a crate the size of a Kmart end table.
Fiesta time
Too many parents have spent the week balancing work and child-care chores. And if you have a child heading to college or already in college, you added filing tax forms and college financial aid forms by the March 1 deadline to the mix. After a week like that, there's only one thing to do -- party. A good place to start is the spring gourmet dinner put on by the University of New Hampshire's hospitality students. "Paraiso Mexicano" features a six-course authentic menu on Friday and Saturday. Dishes feature an appetizer of pork-stuffed peppers, authentic tortilla soup, snapper and shrimp with tomatoes, onions, garlic and jalapeno peppers, duck breast with mole sauce, tortilla salad and fried pastry with chocolate dessert. Live entertainment and a cash bar will round things out.
