Flower show: Tips for bringing the wee ones

The Pennsylvania Convention Center can be extremely crowded. Roughly a quarter-million folks visit the show each year, and no matter when you go, it may be wall-to-wall tourists.

Little ones may find it difficult to see over the heads of adults, so probably the best place for small children is at home with a baby sitter.

Fortunately for those who do bring young children, the theme this year is a kid-friendly one. With Legends of Ireland, many major exhibitors focus on fanciful landscapes. The Pennsylvania Horticultural Society particularly recommends exhibits by the Camden Children's Garden, with its fairy homes, and Waldor Orchids' orchid wonderland as good bets.

The society also points out that entertainment should delight young visitors. There are Irish dancers, musicians and singers performing every hour on the hour daily at the Castle Stage.

Films with black stars look to cross the international 'color line'

"Dreamgirls" is a solid hit in the United States, with more than $100 million in domestic box office sales, and its backers at DreamWorks and Paramount Pictures have been tiptoeing into the international marketplace. They hope that a couple of Oscars and a globe- spanning broadcast of the trio's performance will help overcome any foreign resistance to the musical genre and — more ticklishly — to a nearly all-black cast.

Only recently have movies begun to crack one of Hollywood's most troubling and least openly discussed problems: an international "color line" behind which films relying on black stars often do not perform well. The box office prowess of "Dreamgirls" overseas will help signal whether this newfound success is fleeting or more lasting.

"I always call international the new South, " said Reginald Hudlin, the director of "House Party" and "The Ladies Man" and now the entertainment president of BET Networks.

Fiesta time

Too many parents have spent the week balancing work and child-care chores. And if you have a child heading to college or already in college, you added filing tax forms and college financial aid forms by the March 1 deadline to the mix.

After a week like that, there's only one thing to do -- party. A good place to start is the spring gourmet dinner put on by the University of New Hampshire's hospitality students.

"Paraiso Mexicano" features a six-course authentic menu on Friday and Saturday. Dishes feature an appetizer of pork-stuffed peppers, authentic tortilla soup, snapper and shrimp with tomatoes, onions, garlic and jalapeno peppers, duck breast with mole sauce, tortilla salad and fried pastry with chocolate dessert. Live entertainment and a cash bar will round things out.
