Oscars telecast still most-watched entertainment TV show in US

LOS ANGELES, Feb. 26 (Xinhua) -- Sunday's telecast of the 79th Academy Awards drew a viewership of nearly 40 million across the United States, making the coverage of the Oscars gala night on ABC the most-watched entertainment program, according to statistics released on Monday.

Preliminary figures from Nielsen Media Research said about 39.9 millions Americans, 3 percent more than last year's 38.9 million, watched the telecast ceremony in the Kodak Theater in Hollywood.

The figure is the most for any entertainment program this season. The Oscars have long been the most-watched entertainment program for each television season.

With woman comedian Ellen DeGeneres as the first-time host, viewership was up 15 percent among women aged 18 to 34 and 6 percent among women aged 18 to 49, according to Nielsen Media Research.
