Here is the muse

THEY say that behind every successful man is a woman. It might also be said that behind every successful artist is a muse. It was in 1965 that artist Andy Warhol met his muse, the 22-year-old heiress Edie Sedgwick, whose life is profiled in Factory Girl - starring Sienna Miller - which opens in the UK next month.

The strikingly beautiful model captivated the artist and quickly became his constant companion. As well as inspiring Warhol's work, she was the inspiration for Lou Reed's Femme Fatale and it has been suggested that she sparked much of Bob Dylan's Blonde on Blonde.

Spring fling: A vernal Vermont music preview

Vermonters learn early to waltz through a dreary winter, but the time has now come to dance to a vernal tune.

There could be a stately swaying to the music as the Vermont Symphony Orchestra, conducted by Jaime Laredo and featuring Joseph Kalichstein, lead off the spring season with "Pavane for a Dead Princess" by Ravel and other works at Burlington’s Flynn Center on March 10, and at the Paramount Theatre in Rutland on March 11. This is the first of two VSO spring-season Masterworks programs, showing what small-state resources powered by big-hearted passion for the music can do.

Burlington’s Flynn Center website boasts that Merce Cunningham "redefined the boundaries of movement and space." Better be alert, then, when the Merce Cunningham Dance Company hits the Flynn on March 16.

Bobby held on family court warrant

Massachusetts - For the second time in a year, singer Bobby Brown has been arrested while watching his daughter at a cheerleading competition. On Sunday night, Brown was picked up at a Canton high school on a warrant for failing to appear at a child support hearing in October. He was scheduled to appear Monday afternoon in family court, officials said. In October, Brown paid $11 000 (about R77 000) in delinquent child support after being threatened with arrest if he stepped back into Massachusetts. He owed over two months' worth of payments to Kim Ward, of Stoughton, Massachusetts, the mother of his two teenage children. It was not immediately known if Brown still owes child support. Brown's attorney, Atlanta-based Phaedra Parks, did not immediately return a call to comment. A message also was left at the Norfolk Probate and Family Court.

• Hard Times for the Porn Industry?

Feb. 07, 2007 - Contrary to the popular maxim, what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay there. Like the two big stories that emerged from the Adult Entertainment Expo in Sin City last month: 1) the adult film industry is large enough to potentially be the deciding factor in the battle for format dominance between Blu-ray and High Definition (HD)-DVD, and 2) the adult film industry may be in its worst sales slump in recent memory. Taken together, the two just don't add up.

The reason may well lie in the lack of confirmable information about the porn industry's true size. These numbers-specifically that the sales and rental of pornographic videos and DVDs are a $3.6 billion industry-have been repeated so often in industry and mainstream news outlets that they have acquired the patina of fact.

Crecente: Fresh turn on strategy

Supreme Commander might be flawed and lack head-turning innovation, but this PC title still offers enough tweaks to make the battle-worn, real-time strategy genre seem fresh.

Developer Gas Powered Games says it isn't a sequel to the popular Total Annihilation, but fans will certainly find a lot of similarities.

Supreme Commander, like its predecessor, still involves capturing, defending and mining Mass deposits in order to accrue enough of the substance to make new units. You also have to build generators to power your units and their creation.

But as with all real-time strategy games, the heart of Supreme Commander is about forming and commanding a growing military force in real-time and directing them across a map as you battle it out with player- or computer-controlled armies.

Priming the Mind

Lawrence Williams Jr. (pictured left) loves blood. Don't misunderstand him: The soft-spoken 27-year-old describes himself as "pacifistic" and dislikes the idea of people hurting each other. But when it comes to entertainment, he has a brutal streak. He slaughters space aliens on Xbox as part of his daily exercise routine. His taste in film runs to Quentin Tarantino--in music, to Three 6 Mafia and the Diplomats. "I want the violence to be as realistic as possible in the media," he says. "I don't want the director to go halfway."

While the make-believe hero in Williams is blasting his enemies to bits, the scientist in him is wondering why. The puzzle grew especially vivid during the 2 years he spent working at the National Center for Posttraumatic Stress Disorder in Boston, Massachusetts, after he graduated from Harvard University.

NEW YORK -- In the tough business of putting on pay-per-view events, Ultimate Fighting Championship is no longer getting counted out.

The upstart company that specializes in mixed martial arts matched the once-dominant World Wrestling Entertainment Inc. in pay-per-view revenues during 2006 and surpassed boxing-titan HBO. The three companies make up the bulk of the pay-per-view business.

"It was a killer year," UFC president Dana White said.
