Persian Jews Break with Tradition to Break through in Hollywood
The generation of Iranian Jews who escaped Iran's 1979 Islamic revolution with their parents and traded a fearful existence for lives in New York and Los Angeles are now emerging in the entertainment industry. Whether it's producing Oscar-winning films, appearing on prime-time network television series or performing stand-up comedy, young Jews of Iranian heritage have been breaking with their community's traditional norms and leaving their imprint on Hollywood. Perhaps the most notable success came last year when Iranian Jewish film producer Bob Yari's independent film, "Crash," won the best picture Oscar and generated nearly $100 million in worldwide sales. Yari, 45, made his fortune in real estate development but is no novice when it comes to Hollywood. After receiving a degree in cinematography, he directed the 1989 film, "Mind Games," for MGM.
Koivu gives Montreal a shootout win over Nashville
Nashville, TN (Sports Network) - Saku Koivu tallied the game-winner in a shootout to go along with two assists as Montreal edged Nashville, 6-5, at Gaylord Entertainment Center. Nashville's Paul Kariya scored the first goal in the shootout before Tomas Plekanec evened things for Montreal. After Martin Erat's shot was saved by Jaroslav Halak, Koivu converted to give the Canadiens the advantage. It was up to newly acquired Predator Peter Forsberg to keep it going, but he never got a clean shot before falling in front of the net to end the game. Mark Streit and Sergei Samsonov each had a goal and an assist for the Canadiens, who have won three straight. Michael Ryder, Garth Murray and Alexander Perezhogin rounded out the scoring for Montreal. Halak stopped 26 of the 31 shots he faced for his third win of the campaign.
Ford's Edge is a solid and stylish crossover
Let's get the obvious bad pun out of the way: Considering the stormy financial news swirling around Ford these days, they could use an Edge. Did I just hear a rim shot? This may not be BusinessWeek, but it's clear tough times have descended in Dearborn. The Blue Oval folks have high hopes for this week's featured vehicle, the Edge. I'm driving a top-of-the-line all-wheel drive SEL Plus model loaded with options. .
