Less-than-large bathrooms need jolt of creativity

Q: My mother-in-law just informed me that my bathroom was boring and needed to be decorated. I have to confess that I agree with her, but I have no clue how to decorate a bathroom. Any ideas?

A: Don't you hate it when you mother-in-law is right?

I agree that bathrooms should be as warm and inviting as any other room in your home. The key to a great restroom is to make the space both striking and practical.

If your bathroom is petite, your goal is to make every inch beautiful and efficient. I've become a master at this, since the bathrooms in my historic home are about as big as postage stamps.

Frankly, I like my little lavatories, and when we renovated our home, I decided to keep them small in order to preserve the character of the house. But I did freshen them up with white subway tile, creamy bead board and brown wall paint.

Feds Select New Nuclear Warhead Design

WASHINGTON - The Bush administration selected a design Friday for a new generation of atomic warheads, taking a major step toward building the first new nuclear weapon since the end of the Cold War nearly two decades ago.

The military and the Energy Department selected a design developed by the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory in California over a competing design by the Los Alamos National Laboratory in New Mexico.

The decision to move ahead with the warhead, which eventually would replace the existing arsenal of weapons, has been criticized as sending the wrong signal to the world at a time when the United States is assailing attempts at nuclear weapons development in North Korea and Iran and striving to contain them.

But military and Energy Department officials said the new U.S.

'Mountain of work to do'

Mario Dumont said yesterday his Action democratique du Quebec has "a mountain of work to do" to translate its support in the polls into votes.

A Leger Marketing poll published in yesterday's Gazette confirmed the ADQ is gaining on the Parti Quebecois and the Liberals.

"We've done the work we had to do and now there are three weeks left and we know what we have to do to make sure that the positive trend that we feel will be transformed into votes," he said.

The ADQ wants "ballots in the boxes," Dumont added, "because that is the only thing that is counted at the end of the day."

Dumont said his party is presenting positive ideas, such as his commitment made yesterday that the first act of an ADQ government would be the naming of a public inquiry into improving the quality of life of Quebec's aging population.

Chris Klaus’ Kaneva hunts real money in a virtual world

There is no subscription fee to join Kaneva. However, Klaus said the company will have several revenue streams, including the sale of virtual items and real advertising and merchandising. For example, members watching a video on a virtual television could also see real ads. Another source of income could be corporate sponsorship of video games or events like film festivals on the site.

It is not just about selling. Its about creating an experience, Klaus said. Companies are going to have to realize theres a big shift. People are not being spoon-fed the messages any more, and the marketing will have to enable interface with your company.

Klaus believes Kanevas focus on arts and entertainment will set it apart from other virtual worlds. Still, it will face intense competition from new and existing sites in the virtual galaxy.
