• Hard Times for the Porn Industry?

Feb. 07, 2007 - Contrary to the popular maxim, what happens in Vegas doesn't always stay there. Like the two big stories that emerged from the Adult Entertainment Expo in Sin City last month: 1) the adult film industry is large enough to potentially be the deciding factor in the battle for format dominance between Blu-ray and High Definition (HD)-DVD, and 2) the adult film industry may be in its worst sales slump in recent memory. Taken together, the two just don't add up.

The reason may well lie in the lack of confirmable information about the porn industry's true size. These numbers-specifically that the sales and rental of pornographic videos and DVDs are a $3.6 billion industry-have been repeated so often in industry and mainstream news outlets that they have acquired the patina of fact.

Festival of Ideas aims for masses, strikes few

During an eight-week period beginning this month and ending in April, West Virginia University's Arts and Entertainment program will host a variety of speakers on former President Abraham Lincoln. According to the WVU Arts and Entertainment Web site, renowned historians, writers and political scientists such as James McPherson, Mark Russell and Sarah Vowell will speak on ''the man, the myth, the martyr and American hero'' who was Abraham Lincoln. My question to the University is: Who cares? Though Lincoln is obviously an important figure in American history, why is the University focusing on a topic that very few are interested in? Learning about the 16th U.S. president is not going to help WVU students understand more about current events, unlike previous Festival of Ideas events. Every year, I found at least one speaker I was genuinely interested in and would attend the event, but 2007's lineup is critically lacking speakers students, not just history professors, are interested in.

Trucking terminal may get Dorchester County's approval

ST. GEORGE - Three months after Dorchester County Council killed a proposal for a multimillion-dollar trucking warehouse because neighbors were worried about the noise, another trucking company wants to build a terminal just across the road.

Some of the neighbors are complaining again, but this project appears to be headed for approval.

Both proposals are for land near the intersection of Interstate 26 and U.S. Highway 15 outside of St. George. Trucks would move cargo along I-26 to and from the port of Charleston. The intersection is just east of Interstate 95, a major artery that covers the east coast from Florida to Maine.

With the transportation industry booming with the growth of the port and land prices increasing closer to Charleston, the intersection is a prime attraction for new trucking companies, as well as other light industries, Dorchester County Economic Development Director Jim Friar said.
